Summer Youth Employment Program

Summer Youth Employment Program

Hire LA Youth

Youth looking for job opportunities this summer can apply to the Summer Jobs LA program sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Community Development Department. The program is designed to help youth build their work readiness skills and earn wages through a work experience opportunity.

  • Basic eligibility requirements:
  • Applicants must be 14-24 years old
  • Resident of the City of Los Angeles
  • Must have a legal right to work
  • Family must meet the low income criteria or receive public assistance (unless applicant is a foster child or homeless)
  • Additional eligibility requirements may apply depending on the program funding source

This 6-week program allows for an average of 120 work hours and pays youth $8 an hour. In preparation for their work experience, all youth will complete a Job Skills workshop and orientation prior to reporting to their assigned worksites and will complete a financial literacy curriculum as part of the summer experience. Consistent with prior years, it is anticipated that the number of requests for jobs will far exceed the number of jobs available. To address this situation, the SYEP application process has been revised and a centralized lottery selection process will be used to select youth for the program. Interested youth may participate in the random selection by completing an online SYEP registration.
